Stay calm

Stay calm

We’re told it’s ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ yet for many, the festive period can be a stressful one. Financial, family and social pressures can all bring us close to tipping point and often there’s a sigh of relief when New Year’s Day finally arrives.

Try our three top tips for staying calm and happy this Christmas, whatever is thrown your way:

1.     Take time out for you. It’s essential in this busy time to make time for yourself to relax and spend time doing the things you really enjoy - whether this is exercising, having a peaceful bath or simply watching your favourite film. Plan at least 20 minutes each day when you’ll have some valuable ‘me time’.

2.     Avoid energy and mood ups and downs by eating small amounts little and often, choosing plenty of whole grains, seasonal fruit and vegetables and lean proteins like turkey, fish, nuts and seeds and limiting sugary foods and alcohol. Drinking plenty of water will also help to keep you functioning and feeling at your best.

3.     Make sleep a priority. It may sound simple but sleep is often the first thing to suffer at this time of year. Set yourself a sleep plan for busier weeks and if you know you’re going to be missing out at night time set aside time each day for a restorative twenty-minute power nap.
