Protect yourself from a fall

It’s not just the elderly who are prone to falls - at this time of year whether it’s down to slippery pavements, a few too many tipples, or teetering heels, anyone can experience at best an embarrassing and at worst a bone-breaking fall.

Reduce your risk of painful falls by doing the following:

1. Strengthen your core with Pilates or yoga - if you have strong core muscles (the muscles of the abdomen, back and hips) you’ll have better balance and alignment.

2. Plan for the weather - it sounds simple but if it’s raining, or icy make sure you have the right footwear. Similarly many falls at home are caused by slippery socks or slippers - make sure you’ve got indoor footwear with a good grip.

3. Keep yourself balanced and hands free - if you’ve got heavy bags, try to balance yourself out so that you’re carrying an even weight on both sides of the body (ideally with the majority of the weight in a good quality back pack). Keep your hands free (of mobile phones, food and drink etc) especially in slippery conditions so that if you fall you can break your fall with your hands.
