Breast cancer awareness

This month sees Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to mark this we’re encouraging you to ‘coppa feel’! (www.coppafeel.org).

Did you know that most breast cancers are first discovered through self-checking? And 100% of cases of breast cancer can be fully treated if discovered in the early stages, but by the time breast cancer reaches Stage 4, survival rates fall to just 57%.

There’s no right or wrong way to check your breasts - the important thing is that you do check and notice any changes in texture, notice any lumps or thickening, look for any swelling or discharge, recognise any pain and notice any rash, crusting, puckering or inversion around the nipple area.

All over 50s should also go for mammograms every three years. If you don’t get your invite from your GP don’t be afraid to call and see where it’s got to.

And remember it’s not just women who need to be aware - 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Symptoms in men are similar to those in women - a hard lump usually located around the nipple area, or a change in the area around the nipple.

So get into the habit of checking your breasts regularly, it’ll take less than five minutes and it could save your life.
