At this time of year, pollen allergies can cause discomfort and irritation to many of us. In fact, seasonal allergic rhinitis (the official name for hay fever) affects one in five people.

Hay fever occurs when your body makes antibodies in response to certain triggers such as pollen and symptoms usually include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and stuffy nose. Although hay fever is more common in children and teenagers, you can develop hay fever at any age.

Hay fever can be managed with anti-histamine tablets; nasal sprays and anti-allergy eye drops, but there are also some diet remedies that may help:

·         Omega 3s found in oily fish, walnuts, and flaxseed help to reduce inflammation so may help with wheezing and coughs.

·         Garlic is a natural anti-histamine and has been suggested to reduce the symptoms of hay fever

·         Tea contains an antioxidant called Quercetin which may reduce the inflammation caused by hay fever

Other tips to reduce the impact of hay fever include drying your clothes indoors to avoid picking up pollen, washing your hair each night, staying inside between the peak pollen hours of 10am-3pm and using a steam treatment such as eucalyptus oil to help relieve nasal passages.
