When is bacteria good?

When it’s good bacteria! Pro-biotics are good bacteria (or good yeast) that are found naturally in the digestive system (in fact there are over 500 species that live inside your gut). They help to improve the working of the digestive system and support the lining of the gut. They can also help to fight the harmful bacteria that cause stomach upsets and diarrhea.

But as well as PRO-biotics, you may have also heard of PRE-biotics. These are actually a type of plant fibre that help to nourish and feed the good bacteria (pro-biotics) in the gut. As pro-biotics can easily be damaged by heat and stomach acid, it’s helpful to ensure that you have plenty of pre-biotics in your diet. Pre-biotics are found naturally in onions, leeks, garlic, beans, artichoke, asparagus, wheat bran and bananas.

So instead of buying expensive, sugary pro-biotic drinks and yogurts, boost your digestive health by eating some of these foods each day.
