Folates & depression

Depression is on the rise, now affecting 5 – 10% of people worldwide. Research has shown that diet has an effect on mental health as a strong link between folates (folic acid) and depression has been found.

A study by the University of York and Hull Medical School, consisting of 15,000 people, discovered a link between folates and depression and concluded that nutrition could be key in the prevention and treatment of depression.

This research suggests that folic acid supplements may benefit people suffering from depression. Natural alternatives to the supplements include food such as liver, dried beans and peas,  leafy green vegetables and oranges.
