Snowy fitness

If you’re not a fan of spending hours at the gym and prefer to get your exercise in the fresh air, snow can be a little inconvenient. But when the weather outside is frightful, although it’s tempting to sit around and drink hot chocolate, there’s no need to abandon exercise for good.

Obviously we wouldn’t suggest running on the newly formed ice rinks that take the place of the pavements, and a nice afternoon of golf is going to take a lot longer if it involves hunting in snow drifts, but there are alternatives.

Walking through snow is a lot more physically demanding than walking normally due to all the resistance it causes and the extra effort you exert to ensure that you remain upright. You can burn up to 300 calories in an hour of walking around in the snow. This means that just getting around in the winter wonderland is a worthy workout.

And snowmen, snowball fights and sledding? These activities are a great source of aerobic activity as well as a form of resistance exercise. Think of all those muscles you use to bend, pick up, lift, throw and dodge in the cold. So let your inner-child out and go play in the snow!
